I remember the fireflies in southeast Asia blinking in unison, in synchrony, over the rice padis. The men standing between the train cars with me told me that it was the souls of the dead. Mathematicians have studied this phenomenon in the hopes of understanding other synchronous systems in nature, like the regulation of heartbeats within the human body. You don’t have to see the whole universe to start blinking.
